7th Grade Figure Drawing

"Hanging by a Thread"

In a single-day lesson, students learned about installations, as well as the basics of figure drawing as we explored how to draw the human body in the many different positions we can bend ourselves into. Starting with figure mannequins, we looked at how a series of circles and ovals represents body parts and joints, from which we bend.

We then spoke about the term installation, bringing together many small parts to form a greater, larger whole. The students learned that installations are often site-specific and are designed to transform the perception of a space.

Each 7th grade student completed a figure for a part of this installation, specifically choosing where their figure holds the thread of the balloon.

This installation was a part of the school's curriculum fair where parents and children were asked to join the installation by coloring in and hanging their own figure to a balloon.
