5th Grade Dale Chihuly Installation

The 5th graders learned about the art and installations of Dale Chihuly.

Over the course of his career, Dale Chihuly has revolutionized the art of blown glass, moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture and establishing the use of glass—inherently a fragile but also magical material—as a vehicle for installation and environmental art. He is best known for his magnificent ceiling installation at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, however you can see his artwork first hand at the Schaumburg library, as well as in various areas throughout the entire United States.

We concluded our Dale Chihuly lesson by making our own faux-glass sculptures made from clear solo plastic cups and permanent markers. We talked about how each individual Chihuly piece and each of our individual faux-glass pieces are beautiful in their own right, however (as you can see) the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts!
