Kindergarten Spring Birds

Kindergarteners often want to know how to draw specific things. As a follow-up to the "robot print" lesson (see blog post) where we learned that everything we see is made up of shapes, we continued the lesson by learning how to draw birds by using shapes we already know how to draw.

We first discussed the seasons and talked about the currently changing season from winter to spring. As we listed off the things we do and see and hear during spring, once a child identified seeing and hearing birds in the springtime, we stopped and moved on to talking about the different physical traits we see in birds, including size, color, pattern, shape, etc. We then moved onto learning how to draw a bird by starting with a circle, connecting an oval to it, adding an upside-down triangle in the circle, and two "raindrop" shapes to either side of the oval. After we have the frame of our bird, we can add eyes, feet, color, pattern, etc. After students completed two birds, we practiced using scissors and carefully cut out each bird - one to take home and one to put on the community tree.
